In the spirit of writing avoidance (I'm about to start my writing session and updated my current favorite play list), here's a meme. This is an easy one. Go to your iPod or MP3 player or just your cd/vinyl stack and list the songs and artists in your favorite playlist (or series of cds/albums if that's your poison ;-). Post it in your own journal, unless you're feeling exceptionally lazy, in which case, feel free to use comments here. :-)
This one started out as a playlist of stuff I got from my kid, but I've added to it. Course, in some cases, the 15 year old bought some of the things you might not expect, while the 49 year old also bought 'out of character'. Ah, well, we share. :-)
1. You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The Offspring
2. The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage - Panic! At the Disco
3. Time To Dance - Panic! At the Disco
4. Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off - Panic! At the Disco
5. But It's Better if You Do - Panic! At the Disco
6. I Write Sins Not Tragedies - Panic! At the Disco
7. There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of it Yet - Panic! At the Disco
8. Build God, Then We'll Talk - Panic! At the Disco
9. 1985 - Bowling for Soup
10. Welcome to the Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
11. Thnks Fr Th Mmrs - Fall Out Boy
12. This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race - Fall Out Boy
13. Renegade - Styx
14. High School Never Ends - Bowling for Soup (fixed brain blip)
15. Gimme Three Steps - Lynyrd Skynyrd
16. Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas
17. Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) - Styx
18. Highway to Hell - ACDC
19. Dirty Laundry - Don Henley
20. Rockstar - Nickelback
21. Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
I need to remember to get some more ACDC from her. Kid's got more iTunes money than I do. I also need to figure out if I've got anywhere near enough room to start adding my classical collection. Assuming I can even FIND my Mozart CDs...

List seven songs you are into right now, no matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LiveJournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.
1) You're Gonna Go Far, Kid, by The Offspring
2) There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of it Yet, by Panic! At The Disco
3) Time to Dance, by Panic! At The Disco
4) Sparks of the Tempest, by Kansas
5) What it is, by Mark Knopfler
6) Was I?, by Madeleine Peyroux
7) Blue Collar Man, by Styx
Consider yourself tagged, if you so choose. :-)

Jensen Ackles is a nut. The man is certifiable. This is the vid of his "Dean does Eye of the Tiger" at the end of Yellow Fever. They don't provide embedding code by request.
When we recently upgraded to digital cable, we got some new channels. One of them is Fuse, which is, apparently, a music channel. I was scanning through the listings for tonight and saw they were broadcasting the Fall Out Boy concert in Chicago (I doubt it's live and it's only an hour, which feels short ;-).
Kid and I have decided we really do prefer studio to live versions. ;-) The band pretty much butchered "Thanks for the Memories". "Welcome to the Black Parade" was fine as were several others, the names of which escape me at the moment.
This is not to say I wouldn't enjoy going to a concert. :-) There are intangibles to be gained from the experience that can't be reproduced in a studio or broadcast on tv. I just want studio versions on my iPod. ;-)
(And I bet the security guard by the stage was ready to string Pete Wentz up by this thumbs before the night was done - PW kept yanking people onto the stage and the security guard kept chasing them off again. One hopes it was somewhat planned. ;-)

I'm trying to decide if I should be disturbed that I really really like some MCR songs.
I feel like I'm betraying my generation or something, but sometimes teenagers really do scare the livin' shit out of me.

So, there were four that no one got on the iTunes Meme. I am here, now, to share apparently obscure music with you. :-)
3. Dixie moonlight Swany shore headed homeward just once more.
This one is "Muddy Water" by Madeleine Peyroux. She's got such a lovely rich voice. This is off the Dreamland CD, which may be her first one, I'm not sure. If you've got any taste for jazz at all, check her out.
4. I walk along the lonely street, another night of missing her, I just can't sleep
"Suddenly Blue", by Roger McGuinn (aka, James Roger McGuinn) from his "Back from Rio" album. He was the lead singer and guitar for The Byrds and "Back from Rio" was his comeback solo album in '91. There are some *excellent* songs on there. I always get a kick from "Car Phone", though. "...if there's anyone in space/what they learn about the human race/will be from listenin' to us/talkin' talkin' talkin' talkin' talkin' on the car phone". I always get an image of Thor sitting in orbit and blinking rapidly. :-):-)
11. I have the feeling I've been here before
16. Bye-bye country boy
These last two are off the same CD... and man, were they *easy*! The first line *is* the title. :-) Okay, so maybe she's not the most common name on the block.
The late Susanna McCorkle had a voice like a sweet summer night. Damn, that woman could sing. These are from the CD "The People That You Never Get To Love", which I think was her best. It ranges from the bittersweetness of the title song through upbeat songs like "Call of the City" and "The Lady's In Love With You" and the freakin' hilarious "Foodaphobia". Her cover of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" turns a showtune into a torch song. If you've *ever* even *thought* you might enjoy jazz, check out this cd.

Just these four left. I kinda figured these would be the most obscure, but I'll give it another day before providing the info myself.
The last time I saw this filtering through my flist, I don't think I *had* an iPod.;-) Some of these should be pretty easy. I can only think of a few that'll stump people. :-)
Put your iTunes on shuffle and for the first 20 songs that come up, list the first line. Post them and see how many of them your flist can get.
1. You know, I don't know why, but sometimes, this old town just seems so hopeless
iamrosalita scores with Even the Losers, by Tom Petty
2. Seven days was all she wrote, a kind of ultimatum note
chattycatsmeow came up with the title to match the artist... Seven Days by Sting
3. Dixie moonlight Swany shore headed homeward just once more.
4. I walk along the lonely street, another night of missing her, I just can't sleep
5. I am Jeremiah Dixon, I am a Geordie boy
sg1danny knows Mark Knopfler is a god, Sailing to Philadelphia
6. Dreamin', makin' my way
writinginct got one of the tough ones: Dreamland, as sung by the lovely and talented Madeleine Peyroux
7. It's all right if you love me, it's all right if you don't
chattycatsmeow snagged this one by Tom Petty: Breakdown
8. Well I've been at it ever since I was a kid at school
sg1danny confirms that Mark Knopfler is a god with Do America
9. This is the story of seven brothers
chattycatsmeow tapped this one, Love is Stonger Than Justice, by Sting
10. I'm in the business of misery, let's take it from the top
writinginct called it: Misery Business, by Paramore (great band in concert, btw - bring earplugs, though ;-)
11. I have the feeling I've been here before
12. I am an arms dealer, fitting you with weapons in the form of words
writinginct is on a roll with This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race by Fallout Boy - my kid and her friends think I'm the coolest mom on the planet because I have the explicit version on my iPod
13. I was cuttin' a rug down at a place called The Jug with a girl named Linda Lou
For shame, people! I am shocked that it took so long for this one. :-)
iamrosalita got Gimmee Three Steps by Lynyrd Skynyrd
14. Take a look at my girlfriend, she's the only one I got
And
lovellama FTW with Breakfast in America, Supertramp
15. On a long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha
sflutegirl wins at Turn the Page by Bob Seger
16. Bye-bye country boy
17. I remember standin' on the corner at midnight
writinginct gets it with Down on Mainstreet by Bob Seger
18. Once upon a time, once when you were mine
superbadgirl scores again with Wildest Dreams, by The Moody Blues
19. I must have dreamed a thousand dreams
superbadgirl got it: Land of Confusion, Genesis (the Phil Collins era ;-)
20. You're havin' a hard time lately, you don't feel so good
kaleekat knows her Billy Joel! Only Human
Put your iTunes on shuffle and for the first 20 songs that come up, list the first line. Post them and see how many of them your flist can get.

Does anyone know of a list of songs used in SPN? It's like a classic rock retrospective. ;-) I wonder how many of those songs have seen an upsurge in purchases since the show started. :-)
I keep remembering songs I want for my iPod. I got Freebird and am listening to it right now. This is one of those songs that make me *SO* want to learn how to play the guitar. Not that I'd ever be able to play like that in a million years, but oh, given how it makes me feel to hear it, I can only imagine how it must feel to have it flowing out of you.
I miss playing an instrument... other than my voice, that is. But as much enjoyment as I get from singing, it's just not the *same* as playing an external instrument.
(And now fitting is it that "Gimme Three Steps" is the next song in line. :-)

- Mood:
chipper - Music:Gimme Three Steps, Lynyrd Skynyrd
A very scary combination.
But I did manage to snag some Aerosmith and Genesis I'd been thinking about. :-) Oh, and Freebird. How I missed Freebird I'll never know.
(Btw, Land of Confusion, Love in an Elevator, I Can't Dance and Gimme Three Steps is an odd string of songs...)

If it hasn't been done yet, "High School Never Ends" by Bowling for Soup is just screaming to be an SG1 vid.
The whole damn world is just as obsessed
with who's the best dressed
and who's having sex
who gets the money,
who get the honeys
who's kinda cute
and who's just a mess.
And you still don't have the right looks
and you don't have the right friends
nothing changes but the faces, the names and the trends.
High school never ends.
(I really should go to bed.)

I'm sitting here at 2 AM making an iTunes playlist of my kid's music. Granted, some of these *I* introduced her to, but still. So far Mom's Playlist consists of:
Mad World - Gary Jules with Michael Andrews
All Star - Smash Mouth
American Pie - Don McLean
High School Never Ends - Bowling for Soup
We Will Rock You - Queen
Misery Business - Paramore
1985 - Bowling for Soup
ETA Welcome to the Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
Stop me before I add more! I'm gonna need a full day of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to get back to my roots! :-)
I'm somewhat disturbed that I find I'm enjoying Bowling for Soup. I also liked some of her Fall Out Boy, but I can't remember which ones it was.
ETA Corrected band name as per
sunn_doyouknow, Queen of the Bands. :-)
Just call me eclectic.
On the other hand, she's also got Rhapsody in Blue on there, but it wasn't what I was in the mood for. She also wants to rip my Billy Joel, Supertramp and Bob Seager cds. :-) Oh, and Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits, too. The child does have taste, after all. :-)
