Oh, *crap*!

stupid
In this case, the icon applies to me.

I was reading something, just reading along when all the sudden the solution to a years old original story that I'd abandoned came to me in a blinding flash.

Unfortunately, I lost the damned manuscript in a hard drive crash and have *no* clue where the backup is. I lost several stories when that drive died, but this was one of the three I was most invested in.

Maybe I can resurrect it (and you have *no* idea how appropriate that word is) now that I've *FINALLY* figured out how to finish it.

I really need to get better about keeping track of my backups. I'd gone through a massive electronic cleanup right before the drive crashed and I'm afraid I ditched all my redundant backups only to find they weren't so redundant after all.

*headdesk*

It's such a cool story, too.

At least I think so. I can think of several markets for it, too.

Oh hell, do I ever know the feeling of 'where in the world did I have it???' cause I hate having to reconstruct.

I will have all fingers crossed that you find it (whicj will makkk typpingh funn...) and be able to finish it. Inspiration like that is not to be wasted! :)

Agreed. I think I *could* reconstruct it. I remember most of the major bits and the voice is still in my head.

Guh! That's so maddening! This is why I now obsessively back-up my fiction/website folder on a rewritable disc. ;)

I usually have triple redundancies. Then, one day, I needed the space on my UNIX account (where my final backup is) and wiped it out.

Then couldn't find the others.

*sigh*

GAH!!!!! There are only two things I obsessively back-up. My email folders and my website/fanfic. I stash them on disc, on the external, and I tend to do it about once a month. The only exception is whatever fic I'm working on. Because that changes all the time, an updated copy gets put on the flash drive once a week. ;)

If I trusted online sites, I'd stash copies of most of my important files there.

Check thru all your stuff/backups and if it's not there, take it as a sign you were meant to start over. And as hard as starting over is, it could make for a much better product in the end. Having a full story in your head puts you ahead of the game. ;o)
